About Bristol
With its famed seafaring history, Bristol, UK, is the perfect destination for history buffs. In fact, the town is one of the most visited England cities.
The town began as a port-trading village and is recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 1051. Early residents often traded goods with Ireland, and the town began to grow. However, the original harbour was small, and water conditions caused trouble for docked ships. As a result, Isambard Kingdom Brunel invented the floating harbour. It is still in use today.
Several famous pirates allegedly have personal ties to Bristol including Blackbeard, who is said to have been born in the city. Bartholomew Roberts is another well-known pirate who legitimately worked on a merchant ship and was forced to become a pirate when a band of swashbucklers seized his vessel. Roberts flourished in his new vocation and later became captain.
In addition to enjoying the city's history, travelers who visit Bristol during the summer will have the chance to participate in the city's numerous festivals. The city also features affordable accommodations and plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.
In the South of England, Bristol is considered one of the most culturally active cities with a wide selection of theatre, live musical entertainment and visual arts.
World travelers shouldn't overlook Bristol as the city has much to offer with its unique maritime past and youth-oriented present and future.
